Aster Gauge Beyer-Garratt
Please note due to size and Weight of the Loco if you wish to purchase it, please email or message me, and I can email you an invoice including shipping costs if you don't wish to collect it.
The Prototype: The A4 60 class of 4-8-4+4-8-4 Beyer Garratts were the last standard gauge examples of the type built, by Beyer Peacockin 1952, for use as heavy freight locomotive on New South Wales Government Railway, working coal traffic in particular, up to withdrawal in 1973, when they were replaced by diesels. They were equipped with many modern devices and fittings, and were very effective if, by repute, very noisy to work on.
The Model was released in 2009, and embodied all of Aster’s refinements up to that time. Only 70 examples in the lined livery were offered, although a similar number were offered in unlined black livery, making this a very rare model in Europe, the vast majority being sold in Australia.
The major details of the model are:
Length 1044 mm
Weight 10.83 kg
Cylinders 4 12mm bore x 20mm stroke
Valve Gear Walschaerts
Lubricators 2 x displacement types
Two axle driven water pumps
Locomotive type boiler with superheater. 10 9 mm dia. Tubes and 1 x 18 mm tube
Copper, silver soldered throughout.
Working Pressure: 4 bar
Convertible Meths or Coal firing
3 x safety valves, 2 x superheater tubes, 2 x check valves, Regulator, Blower, Whistle & valve, 2 x by-pass Valves, Blow-down valve, pressure gauge and Water Gauge
Minimum Radius 2 metres (that surprised us as well!)
The model was built from a kit and has only seen light use in the hands of two very careful owners. We have checked it over and run it on compressed air, but it will be checked again by a professional Aster builder before delivery to the proud new owner.
The loco is currently setup for Meths Firing, but comes will all the spare parts to convert it to Coal Firing, as well as the construction manuals.
PLEASE NOTE THE LOCO DOES NOT HAVE A CARRY CASE.
This really is a wonderful opportunity to add an example of this rare locomotive to your stud and make the heads of all who see it in steam turn in admiration.
Payment: Due to the high Costs charged by Credit card providers and Paypal, payment via Bank Transfer or Cheque is preferred. If you wish to use a card or Paypal there will be a 2% fee to cover some of the costs.
Delivery: unless the purchaser wishes to collect the engine, delivery will be by carrier. In this case the model will be split into its three constituent parts, and it will be the purchaser’s responsibility to reassemble it. In reality not very difficult and all the original assembly instructions will be included, along with the tools, spares etc.”
